The angels stand at full salute as a soldier marches home today. At a neck-breaking pace, he storms past Heaven’s gates to once again be held by his beloved, Nancy, who he’s missed for far too many years. Heaven feels just a little more complete once again now that they are reunited.
Eugene W. Machusak, 95, of Sunbury passed away on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 8:15 a.m. in his residence. He was born October 9, 1930, a son of the late Alice Machusak (Wehry) and Walter Machusak. He attended Kulpmont schools. He was married in Shamokin on Nov. 7, 1953 to Nancy Cooper. He was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Shamokin. Gene is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nancy Machusak; and daughters, Diane Schrader and Linda Reed.
He is survived by his brother, Don Machusak; his nieces and nephews; son-in-law and caretaker, Earl Reed; his son-in-law, Wesley Schrader; his daughter, Donna Berry, and her husband Bruce; his three grandchildren, Diana Cheunes and her husband, Ralph Cramer, Trevor Reed and his wife, Ginger, and Lindsay Reed; and finally, his great-grandson, Seth Bobbie.
Eugene was a Staff Sergeant in the Army who took pride in his work for the Army Security Agency, monitoring the enemy to keep us safe at home during the Korean War. When his time in the military was over, he returned home to Nancy and they started a family that would look up to and adore him for the rest of his days. He enjoyed a 35-year career with Bell Telephone. When Gene wasn’t keeping his country safe, he enjoyed playing poker, target shooting, hunting, participating in VFW Events, Bell Telephone monthly breakfasts, doing crosswords and cryptograms, and, most of all, surrounding himself with those he loved the most. He was a man of routine. Until the week prior to his death you could find him every Friday at 4:00 p.m. at his favorite restaurant, Masser’s, enjoying the company of family. He rose before the birds and slept with the sun. Gene was a man with a great sense of humor and a side of stubborn until the end. He always said he stayed around so long because Heaven didn’t want him and Hell was afraid he’d take over.
Now, he’ll monitor the heavens and earth throughout eternity with his beloved wife, Nancy, by his side. Stand tall, all you angels. A soldier is coming home.
